International Teaching Jobs - Thailand

For international teaching jobs, Thailand has become extremely popular over the last decade. With every child entitled to a high school education and a population of 67+million people, there is an abundance of opportunity for foreign teachers to teach at Thailand's plethora of schools.

But it isn't just the public school system that draws interest from foreign teachers. The growing number of expats living in Thailand has spawned a large community of international schools offering both U.S and UK syllabuses. These international schools are inhabited by middle-class Thais and the children of retired expats an foreigners located in Thailand for work. International schools generally pay far better than public Thai schools, yet many foreign teachers opt to teach at public schools because it presents more of a challenge and contributes positively to local communities and society at large.

Thailand

However, just recently the government announced plans to recruit a further 300 foreign teachers for pubic schools with salaries matching, and in many cases bettering, the international schools. This announcement proves the government's long-term commitment to funding education and advancing the overall level of spoken and written English among the population.

There is also the option of teaching at language schools, and for some this will present a more exciting prospect in terms of a broader demographic. Language schools house smaller classes and keener students, comprising a mix of young professionals, university students and the Thai partners of foreign residents. Language schools usually offer a slightly higher salary than Thai public schools, but also command a high standard of teaching.

Typically, Thai schools start at 8am and finish around 3pm. Public school class sizes can run to 40 children in some parts of the country, making it difficult for teachers to control classes and pay solid attention to each individual student. In Thailand, there are only two semesters with no mid-term breaks. Teachers can expect to teach around 180 days per year. Term one usually starts in the first week of May and continues until about the first week of October. The second term then starts around the first week of November. There is no Christmas break, yet there is a 3-4 day break for the New Year. Term two finishes either at the end of February or the first week in March. There is then a two month long summer break.

Thailand also offers a number of TEFL training schools where teachers can obtain their teaching qualification. Having a TEFL certificate is compulsory for most Thai schools and language schools, and makes it far easier for foreign teachers to apply for jobs. The standard of TEFL courses in Thailand rival that of the U.S, UK and other western countries, due to the fact that the courses are designed and usually run by western teachers with huge experience of teaching English as a foreign language. Taking a TEFL course in Thailand is far cheaper than the U.S or UK, and on completion teachers are ideally positioned to immediately find work in the local community.

Music in Thailand

Thailand has a rich culture that goes back many centuries. It can trace its origins to India; the eminent French scholar Georges Coedes included Thailand among the Indianized states of southeast Asia. However, the cultural influences, although emanating from the Subcontinent, entered the country via Burma, the Khmer Empire, and the southern kingdom of Srivijaya.

The Thais are proud of their cultural achievements, and with reason. But to appreciate Thai culture properly some background knowledge is helpful. The bookshop at Silpakorn Fine Arts University has an excellent range of literature on this subject, and if you would like to engage a guide or go on a guided tour the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) can help. The following lines offer a brief introduction.

Thailand

There are two important influences on Thai culture. One is Buddhism. The other is the Ramayana, the Hindu epic poem written in Sanskrit between 500 and 100 BCE by the sage Valmiki. The epic eventually spread to Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, and King Rama I wrote a version entitled the Ramakien. Themes from the epic are present in Thai murals and Thai classical dance.

Thai Dance Thai classical dance (lakhon) was originally performed only at the royal court, but it can now be seen in theaters (notably the National Theater) and is often performed at wedding parties and other celebrations as well as in tourist restaurants.

The whole of the Ramakien would take days to perform, and a performance normally consists of just one episode. A chorus and narrators recite the narrative with musical accompaniment. The dancers tell the story through the use of stylized gestures and postures, and their movements are very slow. They hold their bodies straight from the neck to the hips and move them up and down with knees bent stretching to the rhythm of the music. Their brocaded costumes resemble the dress worn by royalty and mythological figures in old mural paintings. Masks are worn where a character is a demon or monkey.

Classical Music

Thai classical music uses a tonal system different from Western music, but those who are acquainted with Indonesian gamelan music will find many similarities. Unlike Western music which has full tones and semitones in the octave, Thai music has an eight-note octave consisting of full tones.

Among the instruments used are: The ranad or Thai xylophone is usually slightly curved and resembles a boat.

Drums (glong) come in a variety of shapes and sizes; the shallow drum is known as the ram mana.

The kawng is a gong; one common variation is the kawng wong yai, which is a series of gongs (kong) suspended on a circular frame.

The saw is a stringed instrument that is played with a bow. Its body is made from half a coconut shell.

The ching are cymbals.

The bamboo pipe (pee) is a type of oboe.

The orchestra that accompanies Thai classical dance performances-known as a pipat orchestra-usually includes a ranad, pee, ching, kawng wong yai, and a glong.

Actually, the temple construction started in 1788 and was restored in 1824. The Wat Pho was recently restored in 1982 to recapture the old magnificance and grandeur.

The temple is also known as the birth place of traditional Thai massage. In 1962 a school for traditional medicine and massage was also established within the precinct of the temple.

The temple is divided into two blocks by a road that runs from east to west. The first block is where one would find the Reclining Buddha and the second block serves as the residence for monks and it houses the school for the traditional Thai medicine and massage.

10 Unknown Fakten über Thailand

1. Rainmaker King
Some years ago the rice farmers of Thailand experienced a severe drought period. The king, who since many years had been involved in helping the rural population of Thailand invented a method to make rain, for which he also filed an international patent. Airplanes are used to shoot silver iodide chemicals into the clouds in specific ways, so that they are stimulated to rain. This method did proof successful.

2. Mysterious Fireballs
At a certain time of the year, a strange phenomenon occurs that hasn't been scientifically explained yet. Well, there were scientific theories, however, scientists in are still baffled by this phenomenon and unable to explain it properly. It's in the north-eastern part of Thailand, and the locals there have their own explanation for the mysterious fireballs that emerge from the Mekong river: they say these are fireballs from the legendary Naga serpent.

Thailand

One time a TV team tried to uncover "the hoax" and said that the phenomenon was simply Cambodian soldiers shooting into the air. However, they quickly got proven wrong. There are records of this phenomenon occurring for hundreds of years, and It's kind of Thailand's version of the "Loch Ness"

3. Thai Bonsai
Most people are aware with the Japanese bonsai trees. But Thailand also has it's own tradition of miniature trees, which is called mai dat. Historic evidence shows that this tradition has been around already since the 13th century. Mai dat have their own style - there are not as tiny as the Japanese bonsai, but rather often bigger. Also, while with Japanese bonsai the aim is usually to make the small tree look at natural as possible, mai dat are supposed to look particularly well-trimmed. It is the aim of the mai dat artist to create a tree which is made according to human shapes. Thailand is a country which used to be covered almost completely in forest and swampland - it was a tropical wilderness. Only in recent decades have the forests been cleared and turned into farms and cities. Thus, imitating nature is not what Thais consider beautiful.

4. Demigod-King
It is a traditional Thai believe that the King is a human reincarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. All kings of the present dynasty, since the 18th century, have been called "Rama" - the current King being Rama XI. Rama was the name of a halfgod from the Indian epic Ramayana, which has it's own Thai version, the Ramakien.

5. Can't Touch This (Monk)
It is forbidden for woman to touch a Buddhist monk. Some women feel offended by this or think that this is because woman are considered unworthy, but this is not the case. It's simply about avoiding to stirr up feelings that wouldn't be appropriate for monks, feelings like sexual desire.

6. Bangkok Tram
There once was a tram in Bangkok. Nowadays, Bangkok is known for chronic traffic-jammeritis, and pretty much the only way to avoid being stuck in traffic is the ultra-modern skytrain (BTS) or the even newer subway (MRT). However, once upon a time, there was a tram running through Bangkok. The Tram network in Bangkok was established in 1894 and got closed down in 1968. Actually, even as early as 1888 there was a guy called Alfred John Loftus (Phraya Nithetcholthee) who operated a tramway line in Bangkok - drawn by horses! However, after a couple of changes of ownership, the horse-drawn wagons where replaced with electric wagons. New routes were opened and built, until in 1968 the last tramway in Bangkok was stoped.

You can still see some of the railways in the area of Thanon Charoenkrung Soi 39.

7. Thai-Tomboys
While almost everybody knows about the ladyboys in Thailand (and quiet a few men can tell stories of surprise when they found that the "woman" they were hitting on all night was actually not a woman at all), not so many people know that there are also a lot of tomboys: woman or girls who dress, act and look like men. Whole books have been written on Thai gender roles, and while some ladyboys and tomboys and gay feel that they are not treated equally, they are treated much more tolerantly than in probably any other country in the world. For example, I know of the case of a 15 year old boy who decided to be a ladyboy - and indeed dressed, talks and behaves like a woman now. However, schoolmates never made fun, teased or bullied him about it. This being a remote village and not modern Bangkok, it speaks a lot of the tolerance of Thai people towards people who decide to "be different".

9. Long-nailed Fingernails of Men
This might be odd: but many (completely straight) men grow long fingernails. Most commonly is the nail of the small finger. Part of this is because in rural Thailand, long fingernails where indeed a sign of a certain social status: a farmer can't grow long fingernails, because they will simply break during the hard work on the fields. In fact, in Isaan (North-East Thailand) it is even believed that a long nail at the small finger is lucky. Apart of that, many men also told me upon my question why they had a long fingernail that it is useful: it's easy to scratch yourself with a long fingernail, and sometimes just useful to open something.

10. White Is Beautiful
While in the Northern hemisphere, many people would like a stronger tan and use every opportunity to lay in the sun and make their skin darker and more exotic, for Thai's, white and bright skin is beautiful. In fact, Thai's spend about 50 million US-Dollar a year on skin whitening products.

Introduction to the Largest Rivers in Thailand

When you think of Thailand the first thing that springs to mind probably isn't rivers. Thailand is famous for its culture but we actually don't realize how many rivers there are to visit in the country. In fact there are many rivers in Thailand and these are well worth checking out if you are holidaying in the country.

Chao Phraya River System

Thailand

This is the main river system of Thailand and probably the most famous. At 372km long it flows to the Gulf Of Thailand from the central plains of Bangkok. The start of the river is at the exact point where the Ping and Nan rivers meet (Nakhon Sawan)

Once it reaches the town of Chainat it splits into two flows. One of these flows (The Tha Chin) flows parallel to the main river before exiting to the Golf of Thailand just west of Samut Sakhon.

Other River Systems

The Chao Phraya river system is the most famous however there are many other rivers that flow through out Thailand.

These include:

Bang Pakong - This is a river in eastern Thailand. It starts at the point where the Prachiniburi River and the Nakhon Nayok River meet. It flows into the gulf Thailand just north east of the Bay of Bangkok.

Phetchaburi - This river originates in the Kaeng Krachan National Park(western Thailand) and flows right through to the Ban Lat, Tha Yang and Mueang Phetchaburi. At 210km long it then mouths into the Bay of Bangkok

Mae Klong - Another river in Western Thailand. This river starts at the part where the Khwae Noil and the Khwae Yai River meet. It flows into the Gulf of Thailand at Sumat Songkram but not before passing the Ratchaburi Province.

Pran Buri - This starts in southern area of the Kaeng Krachan National Park in the Malay Peninsula. In total it is 130km long; however despite its length it only passes is the Pranburi in the centre of the Pranburi district.

Khlong Kui - This river flows through a number districts including - Ban Pong Kasang, Kui Buri, Bang Thung Faek and Prachuap Khiri Khan

Pattani - This is the longest river in the Malay Peninsula, 214km length in total.

These are just some of the most famous and longest rivers in Thailand. Many of these are picturesque and great to take tourists trips to if you are looking for something different from your holiday

Are They Easy To Get Too?

They are separated throughout the vast country so it depends on which one(s) you want to visit. Try and ask your travel agent for advice before you go. They should be able to advice which ones are in your local area and suggest which ones would be best to visit. If they are not able to help then the tourist guide in your hotel certainly will. Many of the rivers have tourist attractions, river rides etc so they will be easy to find.

Secret Islands For Your Next Holiday in Thailand

Thailand is one of the greatest vacation spots in the world It is inexpensive, has affable people, delicious food, a diverse culture and an amazing variety of sites to visit. You can relax on amazing beaches, hike large mountains, dive impressive coral reefs, visit ancient historical sites, explore great caves, and hang out in energetic and fast paced cities. However, most tourists come to Thailand for the beaches and, these tropical islands are the best reason to come to Thailand. However, Thailand has hundreds of tropical islands to choose from. Most tourists stick go to a few popular Thai islands and with good reason. They wouldn't be popular if they weren't good. However, despite Thailand being firmly on the tourist trail, there are still some undiscovered islands in Thailand. Here are seven islands in Thailand that are relatively not very touristy:

Ko Lipe is a small island located in the southern Thai province of Satun and is situated in the Andaman Sea. The island is located in the Tarutao National Marine Park. The name "Ko Lipe" means paper island in the local Sea Gypsy language. Though Ko Lipe is gradually becoming more touristy, it is still a relatively quite place for now. There are coral reefs for diving right off the island, white sand beaches, inexpensive food, and nice locals. Most places only have electricity until midnight, giving you a place to watch the stars at night. Avoid the holiday season when the crowds peak.

Thailand

Ko Tarutao National Marine Park consists of 51 islands located in the Andaman Sea. Ko Tarutao is the main island and is where the park headquarters is located. There are no lodges, resorts, restaurants, or bars on the island. There is just the park's canteen and a small store that is only open until 8pm. Accommodation here is simply cheap bungalows or tents. For those looking for a cheap and rustic island in Thailand, this place is it.

The island of Ko Chang is a tropical marine national park. Situated in the east near the Cambodian border, it's Thailand's second largest island after Phuket. Recently, with the surge in development and popularity, Ko Chang is Thailand's new popular tourist destination. With its chain of white sandy coves and beaches, pristine rain forests, abundant wildlife, coral reefs, high mountain peaks, waterfalls, and great nightlife, Ko Chang is one of Thailand's most sought after holiday destinations. If you stick to the east side of the island, there is very little development and you can still enjoy a holiday away from the crowds.

Surin National Park is found some 60 km off the west coast of Phang Nga province. The excellent diving, snorkeling, hiking and game fishing are what most visitors come for, and those hoping to find a quiet refuge from the tourist traps will be delighted with the lack of "development." Surin Nuea is also home to a community of around 150 Moken, or "sea gypsies", who have settled there on a semi-permanent basis for several decades. The islands are protected and can only be visited by organized tours, which helps keep the diving good and the crowds thin.

The Similan Islands are composed of nine granite islands washed by a clear blue tropical ocean and blessed with some of the world's finest beaches. Despite a rough start, the Similians and all its reefs have recovered from earlier calamities and overuse. Boats entering the Similan Islands have to follow strict rules imposed and controlled by the national park officials, have to use the moorings prepared by the national park and use closed waste water systems to avoid any pollution.

Ko Lanta is popular with tourists seeking a holiday away from the parties. It's popular with a more relaxed crowd than nearby Ko Phi Phi: more walking on the beach and watching the sunset than drinking and dancing. And even when the island is at its fullest, there will be a quiet place for you to relax - the beaches are never full.

Ko Mak is one of Thailand's best kept treasures. It is an ideal destination for visitors who want a tranquil environment unspoiled by mass tourism. Amongst 10,000 palm trees, there's a temple, three fishing community villages, rubber plantations, and two uninhabited beaches. Hardly anyone comes here, except couples and divers. Koh Mak is the perfect place to relax, explore, calm your mind and soothe your senses.

Journeys to these islands in Thailand will give you peace, quiet, wide beaches, crystal blue ocean, and not a lot of people. Let's keep the secret between us though so the islands stay that way for as long as possible, otherwise these great islands will be ruined at a quick pace.

The Ultimate Guide to Teaching English in Thailand - eBook Bewertung

One of Mike Fook's latest helpful guides is, "The Ultimate Guide to Teaching English in Thailand" which appears to be exactly that.

Mike tones down his usual hard-hitting style with this more than 100 page information packed guide for wannabe teachers of English in the "Land of Smiles" as Thailand is often known.

Thailand

Recent changes have made teaching in Thailand a rather exclusive occupation. Gone are the days of backpackers from Europe or North America popping over to Thailand for a years stay and teaching part-time as they wish.

A number of regulations have been put into place by Thai Ministry of Education authorities which have increased the hoops one needs to jump through in order to teach legally in Thailand. Police background checks from the hopeful teachers home country as well as within Thailand are necessary in most cases.

There is now a Thailand Teaching License that must be awarded for those wishing to teach in Thailand's government school system. This teaching license requires a Thai culture course be attended by all teaching applicants and has set the expat teaching community reeling. Many teachers have since left the country for what they saw as greener grass in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam to name a few Asian countries that benefitted from the English teachers' exodus from Thailand.

Mike covers everything would-be teachers need to know starting with tasks teachers need to complete before leaving their home country. Most foreign English teachers do not stay to teach long-term because it just is not what they expected. Mike states that he hopes to give those considering teaching in Thailand a very realistic view of what the job and cultural experience is like, thereby cutting down on the number of people that waste a year of their lives.

Mike relates that there seems to be a certain type of person that is cut out for the task.

Teachers that go easily with the 'flow' are going to do best in the Thai school system because often the schedule changes at a moment's notice. Those that match themselves with an area, a climate, a cultural tempo that fits them are more likely to survive and thrive as a teacher in Thailand - or as a long-term expat. Adventurists that come to teach for the pure experience of living in and teaching in another culture across the globe tend to do well. Their reward is everyday that they are teaching something new to Thai children and adults, not when the the school day ends at 4:30 p.m.

Before moving to Thailand five years ago, I spent thirty-dollars or so on four paperback books that were supposed to prepare me for teaching in Thailand. None of these books prepared me much for the reality of living, eating, breathing, and getting along socially in a country so different from my own home in America. Mike's book is extremely comprehensive and I can highly recommend "The Ultimate Guide to Teaching English in Thailand" as the premiere resource available on the subject.

Homestay Experience in Thailand?

So you're interested in a homestay experience with a rural hilltribe community in northern Thailand? Sounds Great! Just remember, don't be expecting luxury or hotel type accommodations. Be prepared for rather basic accommodations without too much amenities. Most likely your shower will be very rudimentary and consist of a bucket of cool water that you empty on yourself, and your toilet will be the traditional Thai squat toilet, which is low to the ground and does not flush by itself; you'll have to pour a bucket or two of water to induce the toilet to flush. Don't worry; if you have chosen the right homestay, you'll get a very rustic but clean room with a functional bed. Don't be anticipating gourmet restaurant style food, however meals should be very tasty and healthfully prepared. The ladies in the village who prepare your meals will most likely be very experienced cooks and well versed in their own culinary traditions. If you're a vegetarian, they should be able to accommodate you.

Just a tip - if you're staying with a hilltribe community - i.e. Akha, Hmong, Lisu, Lahu, Karen or Mien, it wouldn't hurt to do some research in advance on their culture and history.

Thailand

While I have no personal experience with in Thailand per se, I had the opportunity to do a site inspection of a relatively new homestay in the mountains, about an hour drive from Chiang Mai, the tourist hub of Northern Thailand. Rooms were simple and small as expected but very clean and had a petite outdoor verandah with chairs in addition to a small area inside the room to lay your personal belongings.

The villagers grow both tea and coffee in the immediate vicinity and many people in the community were engaged in farming and other agricultural pursuits. While perusing the merchandise in their community's gift shop, I bought a special neck collar-pillow stuffed with aromatic green tea. For some strange reason, I thought that US Customs might tear it apart looking for marijuana but they didn't even bat an eye.
